Fill This Hole

January 31st, 2008

Somebody fix the potholes! As sarcastic as it is, this editorial on the Hawaiian Reporter about filling potholes in Honolulu rings true.

How hard can it be to fill potholes? Why have some potholes gone unfilled for over a year?

It’s ridiculous.

Mmmmm… Beer

January 30th, 2008

Cliff and Norm would drink at Maui Brewing Co.Hawaii Blog has a nice post on Maui Brewing Company doubling their capacity.

What does this mean? Well, big picture, it means y’all are drinking locally brewed suds. Coming from Seattle, where there are nearly as many microbrews as Starbucks (OK, maybe not,) it’s great to see such avid support of the local stuff.

And what does this mean for you? Well, obviously, more beer!

Cheers

Good Day, Eh?

January 30th, 2008

Oh CanadaWhile overall visitors to the Islands were down in 2007, tourists from the Great White North increased by more than 5%. Compare that to visitors from Japan, which dropped 3.5%

Of course, even with the gain/drop, visitors from Japan still outnumbered those from Canada by more than 1 million at 1.3 Japanese tourists vs. 288k Canadians.

All we can say is that we heard a whole lot of “ehs” and “a-boats” this past holiday season.

Walking in a Winter Wonderland

Frosty comes to MauiSnow on Haleakala. Gotta love it, right? Right?

A Sweet Scent

January 29th, 2008

Saffron James perfumeThe Honolulu Advertiser has a really nice article on local girl Kate Growney’s new Hawaii-inspired perfume line called Saffron James.

There are currently three fragrances in the line: puakenikeni, plumeria and white ginger, with a fourth (pakalana) in the works.

If you’re a penny pincher, or really, even live on the Islands, this perfume probably isn’t for you at $85 a bottle. But, if you’re currently living stateside and miss home, you could do worse than picking up a bottle. It can be ordered here.

New Wave

January 28th, 2008

Wave power to hit Maui?If you were going to power up the island of Maui, could there be a more abundant resource than waves? This one seems like a no-brainer.

But, like all great sounding ideas, there must be a catch, right? Hey policy makers, how about doing the environmental impact study prior to dropping the cash, m’kay? Do we really want to go through another Superferry-type mess?

Hanafuda

January 27th, 2008

Hanafuda is closedWe don’t know if this item is worth re-starting my blog, but we were dismayed when we swung by Hanafuda in Kihei for a bowl of noodles and found the joint closed.

It was bad enough when the one in Kahului was shut down.

Now what are we supposed to do?

Putting Up a Red Light

April 20th, 2007

Stoplights won't have cameras on HawaiiWhat have we here? The Hawaii state legislature rejected a proposal that would have allowed for cameras at intersections to take photos of cars running through red lights.

The main reason for the rejection? It was thought the cameras were being put in place to maximize revenues on traffic citations, not deter bad driving.

Did I read that right? The government turned down a proposal that would’ve brought in more money? That sound you just heard was a monkey screaming as it flew out of my okole.

Smelly Hippies Rejoice

April 19th, 2007

Smelly hippies rejoice at Peace Day in HawaiiMark your calendars… September 21st has been officially declared “Peace Day” here in Hawaii.

The day coincides with the United Nations’ International Day of Peace.

You’ll need to keep your partying in check, however, as the day isn’t a holiday, so you’ll still have to go to work and to school. So, put the bong down you long-haired freak. And take a shower!

No Tofu for You!

April 18th, 2007

The Soup NaziAfter 38 years, Hawaii Tofu is shutting its doors.

Hawaii Tofu handmakes about 300 blocks of tofu and distributes it through grocery stores and local restaurants.

The owners are closing the business because they’re “getting old” and want to retire.

This means there are now seven family owned and operated businesses in the world. I would “write” more here, but I need to make sure the guy I outsourced to do this work in India isn’t sleeping on the job…

Life In The Fast Lane

April 16th, 2007

Hawaii is the most dangerous state for pedestriansIf I live to be an old man, I’ll definitely be stringing out my time on this fine planet somewhere in the 50th state. So, it’s a little distressing to find that Hawaii is the most dangerous state for elderly pedestrians in the nation.

As the population gets older, this will become a bigger and bigger problem. So, let’s fix it.

Seems the main issue is that the “Walk” signals don’t leave enough time for people to cross the streets. That’s easy enough to fix… though, it means that it will take you that much longer to drive across town. Is the trade off worth it?

They Build Boats in Alabama?

April 15th, 2007

Superferry FairyThe Superferry Alakai was christened in Mobile, Alabama yesterday in front of roughly 150 onlookers. Because, you know, Mobile is a hot bed for ferries and water transportation. What?

Well, maybe it is. Honestly, we don’t know jack about ferry building. We just sort of assumed there was some ferry fairy that built them overnight.

As long as the Superferry truly is safe for the environment, then here’s to breaking a bottle of champagne on the bow of the boat. However, we wonder how often we’ll really take the ferry when it’s twice as expensive as flying. Though, last we checked, it was tough to squeeze our Honda into coach.

R.I.P. Don Ho, 1930 - 2007

Mr. Ho, you will be missed.

Nash Bridges Coaching Opening

April 14th, 2007

Nash BridgesThe University of Hawaii settled on Bob Nash to replace outgoing head basketball coach Riley Wallace for the upcoming season.

While Nash was the definite favorite for the job, nobody can fault the Rainbows for not conducting a thorough search.

Good luck Coach!

Mite-y Big Problem Looming?

April 12th, 2007

Honey BeeVarroa mites have been discovered on honey bees on Oahu, meaning that the pesky mites have found their way to Hawaii, the last bastion of mite-free honey bees in the world.

Importing bees to Hawaii is illegal, so how the mites got here is still a mystery.

Hawaiian honey bees are a popular precisely because they’ve been mite-free. So how this affects our economy is yet to be determined.

Drowning?

April 11th, 2007

Pamela Anderson in HawaiiGet sucked out by a strong rip tide? Fear not, my friend. Pamela Anderson is in Hawaii, and she comes with her own personal flotation devices, which I’m sure she’d be willing to share with you in your time of need.

As those lads from Modest Mouse sing… “And we’ll all float on OK”

Best Beaches as Chosen by You

April 11th, 2007

Lanikai BeachA recent survey of Island residents reveals the beaches that you deem to be best on Hawaii. What do you think?

Personally, I’m a fan of the Kamaole Beaches in Kihei, but whatever, nobody asked me.

  1. Lanikai Beach
  2. Sunset Beach
  3. Waimanalo
  4. Hanalei
  5. Haena beaches
  6. Poipu
  7. Wailea’s five beaches
  8. Makena
  9. Hanauma Bay
  10. Hapuna Beach State Park

Power Up

April 11th, 2007

Super MarioThe old school way to “power up” was to jump and bang your head against a magic box.

However, Sprint is bringing their own flavor of “powering up” to Hawaii in the form of a new EVDO-Rev. A high speed data network.

What does this mean to you, Joe Consumer? Well, it should mean that you can get near DSL speed downloads on your mobile phones. Yes, it’ll be that much easier for you to download porn to phone. Though, when you’re taking care of your ‘business,’ we urge you to that in your own private space.

The new service, which kicks in today, will be available on all of Oahu and Maui, and parts of the Big Island and Kauai.

Congratulations… You’re Rich!

April 11th, 2007

The Beverly HillbilliesOr, maybe you’re poor and living in a tent, thus screwing up these findings. But, for the second year in a row, Hawaii has more millionaires per household than any other state in the Union.

Radio Hula

February 19th, 2007

Old fashioned radioThe “Hawaii Calls” concert at the Hawaii Theatre has been renamed “Radio Hula” after producer Burton White found the name “Hawaii Calls” is not yet in the public name.

In 1935, Webley Edwards created and hosted a radio show from the Moana Surfrider Hotel, that soon grew to a syndicated program that was broadcast on over 600 stations around the world.

The Radio Hula show will take place on May 25th.
